Common use

Calcort is used to treat inflammatory conditions and autoimmune disorders including asthma, arthritis, allergies, and issues affecting the kidneys, heart, digestive system, blood, or eyes. It can also help manage tumors and is administered after organ transplants to prevent rejection. It belongs to the class of medicines known as corticosteroids.

Dosage and direction

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the tablet. Take this medicine at the same time every day for best results. Do not stop taking this medicine without consulting your doctor.

Precautions

Tuberculosis: Patients with a history of tuberculosis need to be cautious when taking Calcort as it might worsen their condition.
Heart Disease: People with heart disease should consult their doctor before taking Calcort, as it could affect the functioning of their heart.
Diabetes: As deflazacort can impact blood sugar control, diabetic patients should monitor their glucose levels closely when on this medication.

Contraindications

Calcort is contraindicated in patients with known allergies to deflazacort and who have a systemic infection or recently taken vaccination containing live viruses.

Pain-relieving medicines: Medicines like carbamazepine, used for pain relief, can have their effects changed when taken alongside Calcort.
Anti-seizure medicines: When taken with Calcort, anti-seizure medicines such as phenobarbitone, phenytoin, and pyrimidine may have altered effects.
Antifungal medicines: Calcort may interfere with the activity of antifungal medications like ketoconazole.

Missed dose

If you forget to take a dose of Calcort, take it as soon as you remember. If it's nearly time for your next dose, leave out the missed one and stick to your regular schedule. Never alter your dosage without speaking to your doctor.

Overdose

If you accidentally take more Calcort than what is prescribed, you might feel nauseous, experience chest pain, or have an increased heartbeat. If these symptoms persist or worsen, inform your doctor.

Storage

Store your Calcort at a cool temperature, below 25°C. Keep it in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Always ensure the medicine is out of reach of children. Make sure you use the medicine before its expiry date.
